Events in the CDS

The Centers for Digital Scholarship hosts a variety of recurring events that are available to the wider Northeastern community. To see the events scheduled for this semester, please visit the upcoming events page. To see past events, please visit the past events page.

Presentations & Workshops

The CDS hosts a variety of structured events throughout the academic year that spotlight specific research or digital skills. These include panels, presentations, film screenings, and workshops. These events are a great way to learn in more detail about ongoing research happening at Northeastern and in the broader field of digital scholarship. The CDS also offers hands-on workshops focused on learning specific digital tools, such as metadata, Twine, and AirTable. See the Events page on the CDS website for more information.

DH Open Office Hours

Digital Humanities (DH) Open Office Hours are informal sessions held throughout the academic year. These events are a great way for beginning and experienced researchers to share knowledge about how to use different tools, or to discuss turning an idea into a solid project. We also share current and completed projects, as well as our experiences with many different facets of the DH world. This is a great opportunity to meet other students and faculty who are interested in DH and see what they’re up to. Participants include members of the NULab for Texts, Maps and Networks, staff members from the Digital Scholarship Group, faculty, librarians, graduate students, and more! See the Events page on the CDS website for more information.

Open Houses

The CDS routinely holds open house events where we invite the broader Northeastern community to come into the CDS and learn more about the work of the various digital projects housed in the space. These events are a great way to join the community of digital scholarship at Northeastern. Open house style events happen at least once a semester. See the Events page on the CDS website for more information.

Zooniverse Challenge Working Group

The Centers for Digital Scholarship leads the Zooniverse Challenge. We will be holding monthly informal group sessions to do Zooniverse together on the third Thursday of each month from 3:00–4:00pm in the CDS. Join us and ask questions, eat snacks, and share progress!

Critical Making

The CDS hosts events and activities that explore the physical and virtual materialization of information, including small-scale artisanal and traditional forms (textiles, paper) as well as data visualization, microcontrollers, and data physicalization. We’re particularly interested in exploring the critical implications of such manifestations: how to work with the edges of informational categories, how physical forms shape our interactions with information and reveal assumptions about narrative and sense-making. We offer workshops and informal get-togethers on several topics and welcome suggestions for additional programs!

Fiber Arts

The Fiber + DH group meets regularly in the Critical Making Lab to create, share techniques, and discuss all aspects of fiber arts and digital humanities. Our regular meeting time is Wednesdays at 12:00; see the Critical Making page for details.

Zines and Paper

The CDS is developing a series of workshops and informal experimentation sessions focused on zines, bookbinding, and community information-sharing, funded by a generous NULab seedling grant. Our through line is a community-sourced cookbook, with additional excursions into other kinds of instructions and documentation and “code.” We’ll also be experimenting with different ways of manifesting narratives and information through small-scale paper forms. We’ll have a schedule of events soon, stay tuned!
