A neighborhood is more than just a group of dwellings: it is also a network of relationships, a fabric of shared paths and spaces, and sense of mutual interdependence. The Centers for Digital Scholarship is an experiment in creating a neighborhood for digital scholarship research and practice at Northeastern University. It is not “a center” but a space of plural “centers” each with its own identity and community and web of connections. It is a physical space that is also committed to the virtual accessibility of its activities and learning opportunities. Like a neighborhood, it gives projects a place to live where—when they step out of their front door—they can visit neighbors, join them in social activities, and plan things to do together.

In practical terms, the CDS provides space and resources for digital projects and programs at Northeastern University that can benefit most from a shared location. The Digital Scholarship Group, the NULab, and the Humanities Center all have a presence and provide support in different ways to digital projects at all stages of their life cycles. Resources like meeting space, digitization equipment, and expertise help projects to work effectively and compete for external funding.
